*** Part of my Lewis & Clark Series ***
Terrain Difficulty: Moderate (steep slope, 400 yards RT)
Status: reported missing (6/20/13)

In July, 1804, Lewis and Clark entered the area now known as Nebraska. They traveled upriver past today's towns of Nebraska City, Omaha and Sioux City, Iowa, where Sergeant Floyd died and was buried. They also passed by a very special place in southeast Nebraska called Indian Cave State Park. It contains a sandstone cavity with petroglyphs drawn by ancient Indians, great camping, and over 20 miles of hiking trails. It is also home to this letterbox. So come visit "Nebraska's Best Kept Secret".

Directions:
From Shubert, go east on Hwy 62 to Hwy 67, then turn left (north). After 2 miles, turn right (east) on Hwy 64E spur and go 5 miles to Indian Cave State Park on the right.

Clues:
Enter park, pay fee and get a map. Follow the main road near its end to Indian Cave and spend some time enjoying it. Then continue on the main road a little further to its end and park near the outhouse. Walk behind the outhouse (southeast) across the open grassy area to trail head #11. Hike uphill for about 200 yards to a trail jct. with a post saying Trail #11. You can go right for about 50 yards for a view of the Missouri River, then return to the post. Walk from the post northwest at 320 for 9 steps to the far edge of the trail at base of a hill. Face southwest at 240 and locate a six foot stump up the hill about 40 steps away. Walk to the stump the best way you can and look in the hollow end of a downed tree just east of the stump. The box will be there under some bark. Please re-cover well.
