Starting in 1914 with 18 acres, Rose Hills Memorial Park has grown to become the largest cemetery in The United States. Just south of the 60 freeway, exit the 605 freeway at Rose Hills Rd, turn left on Workman Mill Rd and right into Gate 1.
Stay on the main road and drive all the way up and back. Follow the signs to Grace Terrace, to borrow a line from C.S. Lewis, "further up and further in." When the Buddhist Columbarium is on your right, turn left, then right through the gates and uphill, parking at the end of the cul-de-sac. Come in the morning or early afternoon, because those gates sometimes close in the evening, or just hike your way up the hill.
Proceed uphill on the dirt path. When you've almost crested the hill, on your left will be an electrical box in the ground. Stand on this and face the only large tree in the area, ahead and to the left. Walk 20 steps towards the tree through the brush (or walk around the brush and estimate 20 steps) to a pile of rocks.
I used a small container because I thought I would need to stash it in a hole in a tree somewhere, but this secluded path was much better. On your way back down to your car, enjoy the amazing view across Los Angeles. |
