Well, although all roads do not exactly lead to Lake Mendocino, there are at least a few. Both Golden and Bald Eagles have been seen from the “wilderness” side of the Lake this year. To find the Mendocino Eagle Letterbox exit Hwy. 101 at Hwy. 20 going east between Willits and Ukiah. After three or four miles, first passing the Marina Drive entrance to the Lake, you will come to the Bu-Shay Recreational Area on your right. We visited during “off-season,” meaning we had to park outside the entrance and kiosk and walk in, but we also didn’t have to pay a day use fee. During the season when group camping sites are open you can drive in and park at the day use area. But today we sauntered right in walking down the main road until we reached the Kaweyo Trail (fire lane). I understand you can reach the Kaweyo Trail from day use parking as well, walking through group camping to return to the main road and the trailhead. I could not discover what the day use fee was.

From the start of the Kaweyo Trail keep walking. Keep walking up and down, first down into a place which has two large corrugated pipes guiding a seasonal creek under the road. Later a second one of these set-ups only the walk is steeper, both up and down.

So there you are on the fire road/trail. After awhile you’ll see another Trail sign (5.5) which will take you to the right and will just be on the trail instead of a fire road. Take about 50 steps on the trail from the Trail sign. On your right will be a double-trunked oak four or five steps from the trail. In a decayed cavity of the tree approached from the south side of the tree and reached from the top of the cavity under some pieces of bark and rocks will be the Mendocino Eagle Letterbox.

Please close box tightly and conceal carefully.

Little surprise for first finder!

Thanks for coming.
