*** Old West Fort Series ***

The "Fort Clark" Minibox is located in Fort Clark Springs, now a resort community in Bracketville. Many of the fort buildings still stand, and are privately owned. The barracks now serve as a hotel you can stay at. There are trails, swimming, camping, RVing, golfing and much more available in this resort, as well as exploring all the fort buildings. Fort Clark was established on June 20, 1852 on the right side of Las Moras Creek, near its head (spring is in the resort). The post was a part of the frontier defense line of forts, and helped guard the San Antonio - El Paso road. It was first called Fort Riley, but on July 16, 1852 was designated Fort Clark in honor of Major John B. Clark (1st US Infantry) who died on August 23, 1847. Captain William Edgar Prince (1st US Infantry) established the fort, but the first permanent building were not erected until 1857. On March 19, 1861 it was surrendered to the Confederacy. It was not garrisoned again until December 10, 1866 by Captain John A. Wilcox and the 4th Cavalry. The post was not abandoned until 1946. Due to private ownership, much of the fort is actually in great shape today, with many historical markers.

Directions:
From Hwy 90 in Brackettville, turn into Fort Clark Springs on Fort Clark Rd and stop to check in at entry station. Tell them you are just visiting, and wanted to see the fort buildings. Enter the grounds and go straight, passing the 2 parade grounds. Follow the signs for the camping area, eventually turning left on Scales rd. Continue on Scales until you cross the bridge over the creek, and take immediate right into camping area and park.

To the Minibox:
Walk back up the dirt road you just came in on, and across the street. Get on the trail through the white gate. Go left at the first junction and soon follow the creek to the right. Pass a bench, then another one with trail junction. Keep going straight along creek to the 3rd bench. With back to the bench and creek, locate large tree just off the path. Box is on back side of this tree, under sticks and rock pile.
