*** Old West Fort Series ***

The "Fort Merrill" Minibox is located in T.I.P.S. park, near Three Rivers, Texas. The actual site of the fort was south of here in Dinero, but it is in the same county. Nothing remains of the fort, but a historical marker. It was established March 1, 1850, near the right bank of the Nueces River, as one in a line of forts for the defense of the Texas frontier. Captain Samuel M. Plummer of the 1st US Infantry established the fort, and it was named for Captain Moses E. Merrill (5th US Infantry), who died September 8, 1847 in the Battle of Molino del Rey. The fort was abondoned on December 1, 1855.

Directions:
From I-37, going south from San Antonio, exit #72 at Three Rivers. Take Hwy 281 about 5 miles, then turn right on SR-72(Thorton St) to the park on the lest just after crossing over the river bridge. Turn into park, and park by the restrooms and pavillion.

To the Minibox:
Walk toward the river on the road. Turn right on road and wak to the 2 white picnic tables ahead. From the far table, look away from the river at cement ruins. See the tree half way to the ruins on the left. Go to that tree. Box is at base of the tree, on the left side, behind vines and under rocks.
