The "Old Bear Creek Texas Ranger Camp" is located in South Llano River State Park. The original camp site is north of Junction. The Camp was established in October 1877 as a patrol base for Company E of the Frontier Battalion of Texas Rangers, looking out for Indians and outlaws along the Llano River. This area was popular for cattle and horse thieves, murderes and mail robbers, and soon many were captured by the 30 man unit comanded by Lt. N.O. Reynolds. These Rangers helped fight off one of the last Indian raids in the area. This camp was used unitl the mid 1880's.
Directions:
From Junction, go south on Hwy 377 to South Llano River S.P. on the left.
Enter park and go to Ranger Station and pay fee.
Once you have paid, then proceed to Walk In Camping are in back of park, and park in lot.
To the Minibox:
Start at the "Fawn Trail" sign and hike past the Bird Blind on the right. Turn left on road and continue on "Trail". Go down road, across a draw, and up. At signs for Overlook and Fawn Trail, go right on Fawn Trail, and count from that sign 125 steps along the trail. See 4 limbed tree on your left. Box is at base, in middle, under rocks.
