Park at the Waterrock Knob (mile 451.2) parking lot. There are bathrooms here as well as a nice view off both sides of the mountains into Tennessee and North Carolina.

Take the paved trail to the overlook. The trail beyond to the letterbox is unpaved, but it is not far up the trail. The whole hike to the summit (well worth the effort) and back to your car is barely over 1 mile. The box is located about 1/3 of the way up the unpaved portion. To the top and back will take 45 minutes and the climb is rated strenuous. We did it with 3 kids (the youngest is 3) and wearing sandals.

When you make it to the top, come back down and tell the person in the ranger station and they will give you a certificate of achievment! What a deal! : )

I had grand illusions of ryming the clues, but now that I am back home, I fear I may jumble a clue trying to make it fit a pattern, so these short-hand clues will have to do. I did get creative with the ending.

From the flagstone court, 12 steps lead up.

Continue upward through rhodedendron tunnel.
Climb a rock in the trail.

A straight stretch-not flat.
Upward, climb on.

Worn rock-not steps carry you up.

2 rocks jut up to split the trail
6 logs lay across to slow the flow.

Worn rock leads to stone stairs
A dozen or so lead to the top
A dozen more paces and then you stop.
Look left, a slight fork in the path-was it made by bears?

On the left of the trail
Before the path gets "steep:
There is a small path
Hidden in shadows deep.

The shadows are made
By a spreading evergreen tree
Look at the base and see a spreading knee.

The box is nestled on the back side under a root
My very first carved stamp is the loot.
