Colorful Colorado: Cripple Creek

Slogan: World’s Greatest Gold Camp

The city of Cripple Creek in Teller County Colorado came into being in the 1800’s due to the large gold deposits in the area. Situated at 9591 ft, the allure of gold kept this town alive even though the terrain, altitude, and challenging weather could be a deterrent to the more faint of heart. Cripple Creek was the heart and soul of Colorado around the turn of the last century and was such an important city that it was seriously considered to be the official Capital of the State of Colorado. Denver won that contest, but Cripple Creek is alive and kicking to this day. This city has a colorful history and there is much to do besides the gambling at the casinos that it has become well known for today. I especially enjoy The Molly Kathleen Gold Mine Tour ($), The Heritage Center (free), and The Jailhouse Museum (free).

Driving Directions: From the 4 corners in Divide, CO travel south on HWY 67 about 16 miles to the overlook pullout. To the southwest on the horizon lies the Sangre De Cristo Mountain Range. The view is spectacular. Below to the southwest lies the City of Cripple Creek.

To find your treasure, read the signs and notice that the support structure for the main informational sign is made of a metal I-beam. The magnetic box is on the west side of that sign.
Please be discreet especially during tourist season as it is one of the best places around to get great photos.
