Essayons is the motto of the US Army Corps of Engineers who in 1958 built the earthen dam which allowed the filling of Lake Mendocino and covered Coyote Valley. Essayons is French for “Let us try.” A worthy motto that and you can visit history of the Corps at this website:

Rather a mixed blessing, Lake Mendocino, destroying agricultural pursuits, homes and a community. However, we do have this nice recreation area, hydroelectric power and much more water for both Sonoma and Mendocino Counties in addition to regulating flood water in the winter and spring.

Start your quest for the Essayons Letterbox at Pickle Point where perhaps you will have found another letterbox. Continue walking down the trail. Don’t let brush piled on the path stop you. Don’t let places where the trail has washed out stop you. It’s all passable. If you note either a beach or the lake (depending on how much water is in the lake) on your left you’re going the right way. On the trail above and skirting the beach you will come to a spot where the trail branches. Go up and on your right. Then at the Y bear left and straight. Keep walking until you note several decrepit fence posts on your right with a little of the old wire fencing festooning a post. You will come almost immediately to a sharp turn in the trail lined with rock on the side. At the sharp curve walk about 75 steps until you come to the next sharp turn. From that turn walk about 50 steps. Then you will have a choice of following the trail or turning toward the lake. Turn toward the lake and walk about 8 steps where you will note 3 long poles on your left. Walk 3/5 of the distance alongside the pole closest to the lake. Behind the rock you will find the Essayons Letterbox. Mind the tar or cresote oozing out of the pole.

Thanks for coming!
