CLUES:

Leinenkugel's, the seventh oldest brewers in the United States, was founded by Jacob Leinenkugel, an immigrant from Bavaria who descended from a family of brewmasters. Leinenkugel chose to start a brewery in the northwoods town of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. When he first came to this town, he found wide rivers, lush forests, clean water, all surrounded by a land of thirsty lumberjacks and trappers. So he and business partner John Miller set to work building the Spring Brewery. In 1867, the first batch of Leinenkugel’s beer was born.

To get in the proper spirit of this letterbox, your best bet is to take a brewery tour. Active since 1867, the brewery is operated by fifth generation family members. Leinenkugel's Leinie Lodge, a gift shop and beer sampling bar, is open year around with tours available most days. Visit www.leinie.com for more information.

After your tour of Leinie’s, head to the north entrance of a large Chippewa Falls park. Take Hwy 124 approximately 2 miles north, and then head west on Hwy S for .7 miles to the park entrance on the south side of the highway. After turning into the entrance, park in the lot immediately on your right.

Head out on the trail at the west side of the lot. You might eventually notice a small “Y”, but stay on the main trail. You’ll cross a small culvert after ~10 minutes into your hike and then 5 minutes later you’ll reach an intersection.

Take the path at A degrees (where A is the age founder Jacob was when he died), then the path at B degrees (where B is half the recommended serving temperature for Berry Weiss). Pass a large snag on the left. When you reach another large snag on the right, stop. Notice the large tree on the opposite side of the trail that may have imbibed too much and is now in a relaxed reclining posture? The Leinie that the piney had been enjoying is tucked behind the recumbent one, where she rests against her more upstanding friend.

After enjoying a brewski, please be sure to rehide the refreshments well and then continue on your way along the trail. You may again notice a small “Y”, but stay on the main trail. At the next intersection, take the path at 40 degrees and you can make your way back to your vehicle.

We'd really appreciate an email with a status update if you look for the box. Thanks!

After finding the box, you may want to spend more time exploring the park. “Abundant woods and waterways enhance the park’s 300+ acres which play host to a zoo, historical displays, playgrounds, wading fountain, picnic areas, hiking and cross country ski trails, and the waterfalls of Glen Loch Dam.

Hike length: 1-2 miles
