CluesSouth Bay Series #2
Alive and well as of 7/26/10
NOTE: This box can be done individually as a quick drive-by, or can be combined into a nice 6 1/2 mile (round trip) hike with Reservoir Dogs and Dive N' Surf. With plenty of parking along the Greenbelt, you can begin wherever you wish, doubling back in either direction. Add to that the relatively short trips on either side of Manhattan Beach Blvd to the pier and Polliwog Park, and you've got a nice day of letterboxing.
-----
The Rails-to-Trails Conservancy is a nonprofit organization working to transform unused rail corridors into trails, enhancing the environment and neighborhoods. One of these is The Hermosa Valley Greenbelt, running from the southern end of Hermosa Beach just a few blocks in from the beach, then northeast to Manhattan Village in Manhattan Beach. It's a wood-chip covered level hiking trail surrounded by beautiful greenery, and the bordering streets have lots of parking.
Heading north on the trail, just south of Valley Park where the Greenbelt meets 24th place, you'll find the 1 1/4 mile (2 1/2 mile) marker. From this, count 50 steps to a bench on your right, then 100 more steps to a fallen tree partly overgrown with ice plants. Where the trunk has a V, look underneath the one on the right. It arches down to the ground and then is covered in a canopy of ice plants. Reach arms length into the hole this forms. Try not to trample the ice plants on the slope as you retrieve and replace the box.
When you're finished, make sure the logbook is in a bag, and that bag, along with the stamp and the inkpad, are all in a second bag.
If you're doing all three as one long hike, head north from here to Reservoir Dogs then double-back, or head south from here to Dive N' Surf then double-back. |
