South Bay Series #1
Alive and well as of 8/18/10

NOTE: This box can be done individually as a quick drive-by, or can be combined into a nice 6 1/2 mile (round trip) hike with Rails-To-Trails and Dive N' Surf. With plenty of parking along the Greenbelt, you can begin wherever you wish, doubling back in either direction. Add to that the relatively short trips on either side of Manhattan Beach Blvd to the pier and Polliwog Park, and you've got a nice day of letterboxing.

-----

Prior to becoming a famous indie-film writer-director, Quentin Tarantino worked at Video Archives, a video store formerly located at 1822 N Sepulveda Blvd. His directorial debut Reservoir Dogs remains, in my humble opinion, his best. The group of professional criminals (Mr. Blonde, Mr. Blue, Mr. White, Mr. Pink, Mr. Orange and Mr. Brown) are icons of swaggering bravado and cool brought down by paranoia and lies.

From the former store location, look north and follow the marine until he ends at the veterans. Park and head east on the trail. Just after the 3 1/4 mile (1/2 mile) marker, walk down and around a small grove. The box is completely buried in leaves and wood chips at the base of a tree, in line with the 30 sign. I put a sawed-off chunk of tree on top, but that marker probably won't last.

The stamp is black, but if you use colored pens, color just their four ties pink, orange, yellow and blue (right to left looking at the stamp, left to right in the final image). Even after three patient hours, this carving came out so good that I still can't believe I did it.

When you're finished, make sure the logbook is in a bag, and that bag, along with the stamp and the inkpad, are all in a second bag.

If you're doing all three as one long hike, head south from here to Rails-To-Trails, then continue on to Dive N' Surf and double-back.
