This letterbox first appeared at the WI Letterboxing 10th Anniversary Gathering. It is now planted in a permanent location.

Location: A park named for the 16th President of the USA. Park in the last lot beyond the ladder that isn’t for people.

Distance/Time: A little over a mile roundtrip; 45-60 minutes depending on trail conditions & your hiking speed.

Terrain: Level gravel and mulched trails.

CLUES:

Food manufacturer William Horlick of Racine, with his brother James, patented malted milk in 1883. Malted milk is a powdered food product made from a mixture of malted barley, wheat flour, and whole milk, which is evaporated until it forms a powder. It was developed as an improved nutritional supplement for infants and was originally marketed as “Diastoid” . Despite its origins as a health food for infants and invalids, malted milk found unexpected markets. Explorers appreciated its lightweight, non-perishable, high-calorie qualities and took malted milk on treks worldwide. A mountain range in Antarctica was even named after Horlick. Back at home, people began drinking Horlick’s product for the taste. Malted milk became a standard offering at soda fountains, and found greater popularity when mixed with ice cream in a “malt.”

To begin your search for this tasty treat, cross the bridge you should see to the north, then go against the flow. Learn about invasives and an urban oasis as you stroll along. You’re heading nearer to the original Horlick’s manufacturing facility. When you come to another bridge, cross over to continue your search. When you reach a powerful location, your exploration party should head left. Upon reaching the river, continue your journey against the flow. To complete your quest for an old-fashioned “energy drink”, stay left, ignoring two diversions to the right. Watch for a mighty triumvirate on the left, about 16 steps off the path. This is the spot for your image refreshment. This box is less than a mile away from where the popular powder was first produced. Please reseal VERY carefully and replace well and securely to avoid a “Disatoid” if the river rises!

To return to your starting point, continue along the path and after approximately 45 steps you’ll reach a “T”. Take a right, then a right at a “Y”. Next take a left to pass through a yellow gate. The powerful powder should have given you the energy to take a right turn after the gate, then right again through some posts, past a bench and then a bridge crossing. Float along the path alongside the river until you reach another bridge and you should be able to see your vehicle.

Did you know that when Robert Perry discovered the North Pole in 1909, he had Malted Milk with him? A few years later, Raoul Amundsen took boxes of the tablets to the South Pole. Malted Milk tablets also went into outer space with John Glenn Jr. in 1962. So as you tackle more letterboxing challenges in the future, you may want to take some malted milk with YOU! The best way to finish off this adventure is to go get a malted milk somewhere, or at least some malted milk balls. Mmmm…. One of my favorite flavors!

We'd really appreciate an email with a status update if you look for the box. Thanks!
