The Carolina Chickadee is a small chickadee with gray upperparts, distinct black cap and bib, dull white cheeks, and white underparts with rust-brown flanksand a short, black bill. When disturbed in its nest during incubation, it will hiss and strike intruders, similar to how a snake would act. Carolina Chickadees are often found foraging in mixed-species flocks with their relative the Tufted Titmouse. Hybridization sometimes occurs with the Blacked-capped Chickadee where the species’ populations overlap along the eastern section of their ranges. The Carolina Chickadee will regularly visit bird feeders but prefers to take the food to a nearby branch to eat. A group of chickadees are collectively known as "a banditry of chickadees", and a "dissimulation of chickadees"
Directions:
Possum Kingdom State Park is located in Palo Pinto County, but can only be reached by driving 17 miles north on Park Road 33 from Caddo, which is in Stephens County. Drive into the park, pay the fee and get a map.
To the Box:
From the Spanish Oaks camping area, drive past the swimming area to the paved turnaround, then through the gate to the trailhead parking area and park there. From the trail marker, walk 110 steps until you see, on your left, two yellow rebar arrows. Walk between them and turn sharply left. Walk uphill to the rocky outcropping in the trail and have a seat, looking back down the way you just came. Look 260 degrees and, maybe 50 feet away you will a large block shaped rock with a flat top. There’s a small trail to your left that will get you above the rock, where you can make your way to it. The box is under the rock on the uphill side covered with small flat stones. Please be sure to recover it well so that it can’t be seen by the casual observer.
