The town of Benjamin was founded in 1884 by Hilory H. Bedford and named after his oldest son, Benjamin C. Bedford. It’s the only town we know of that was named for someone who was struck by lightning.

Directions:
Benjamin is the county seat of Knox County and is located at the intersection of Highways 6 and 82, 90 miles north of Abilene. From the courthouse, go south on Hwy. 6. Just outside of town, which is not far, there is a green sign pointing to Benjamin Cemetery, and you can see it to your left, about a quarter of a mile away. Turn east on Ivy Street to the cemetery and enter at the north gate. Drive all the way to the south end of the entry road and park.

To the Box:
Look to the left for a marker that is shaped like a lectern with an open Bible on top. This stone marks the grave of Benjamin C. Bedford. From his marker, take a compass reading of 240 degrees, which is almost due west. There are 3 trees lined up. The box lies at the bottom of the 3rd tree, in a hole made when a dead trunk was cut off. The box has a rock and other debris on top. Be respectful and be sure to hide the box well so that it can’t be seen. Look for the Coyote box in this cemetery.
