Kit Kittredge, American Girl
This letterbox is based on Kit Kittredge from the wonderful American Girl book series. Kit Kittredge grew up in the 1930’s during the Great Depression. During this particularly difficult time of economic strife in American history many American’s were out of work and some lost their homes to bank foreclosure. Resourceful children like Kit worked hard to help their families and learned to have fun without spending money.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal offered hope. Roosevelt initiated the Works Progress Administration (WPA) to get people back to work and earning paychecks.
This letterbox can be found in the Village of Rhinebeck. This site was previously the location of the original Rhinebeck branch of the U.S. Post Office. While it is no longer a Post Office, you might stop here to pay taxes, obtain a marriage license, or witness the judicial system. This brick building was built by the WPA. 1939 marks the spot. Within a bush our box is hidden. Please replace carefully!
