BikeMan # 1 "Valley of Coal"
-------------------
Valley of Coal Letterbox
Named after Glen Carbon IL which means "valley of Coal". Begin at the Old Troy Road Junction of the trail (North end). Locate the School House rail bridge, pass under it and continue south west. From the 3 Mile Marker take 390 adult paces or 480 8-year old paces or 470 6-year old paces until you reach the old concrete railroad marker (it is blank). You will find the box located SE across the ditch against the fence under a pile of rocks.
You will need to see this clue inorder to locate the box -->

Trail Notes
We placed this box in July on an unusually cool day. We enjoyed seeing the many bright green damselflies flittering around and the beautiful spiderwebs along the trail. The spot that we placed the box had many small round rocks that my kids enjoyed searching through.
Coords:
38° 45.81 N
89° 56.57 W
6/29/01: The concrete marker has been wiped out but, if you pay close attention to the drawing on the map...you will find the spot just fine. :o)
Heritage Bike Trail
The Heritage Bike Trail was built on an old rail right-of-way: coal line. As you follow the trail, look for the many evidences of the old line and even old abandoned equipment behind the fences. :o)
