This is the very first letterbox hidden in southern Illinois.
We hid this as part of a scavanger hunt for my kids' birthday party in the summer 1999 after reading the Smithsonian Magazine article.

The original jpeg was on the first Letterboxing USA page before it was taken down.

CLUES

First read "the Owl and the Pussy Cat," then to find the Letterbox, locate Jarvis Township on a map ... between Collinsville & Troy IL.

The letterbox is in the Wilson Heights subdivision on Dale Avenue. Dale Ave was formally named Art Avenue. From Rte 40 near Troy turn onto the south frontage road of 55/70. (South Troy Road), heading west, Dale Ave will be the second street on the left.

Locate the flowering quince bush on the west side of the road. Stand at the bush, turn to the north Walk for 40 strides (child size about 4'-8"). Stand in the roadside ditch and turn west. Do you see a pea green boat? The letterbox should be right in front of you. Please do not walk on the flowers.

Happy Hunting ! Happy Letterboxing.

BTW there is no need to leave the ditch.

The letterbox opens ...PLEASE DON"T TUG it out of the ground.

In case you have trouble converting your strides to child size ...if you pass up the telephone pole you've gone too far.

The original stamps & log book are there but show their age ...water and fire damage.

We have also made this into a geocache.
