* You will need a compass to find this box *

Welcome to the Schunemunk Mountain letterbox! Schunemunk means “excellent fireplace” in the Algonquin tongue; we hope you enjoy the mountain as much as we do. The trail we use from here is the Long Path. From this trail head, the hike to this letterbox is up hill, but worth the view that awaits you. The trail is clear, which makes for an easy walk, but be prepared for a good ascent. Hiking time is 75 minutes (with two kids, 10 & 12).
You can get the trail head from Hilmar Lodge on Clove Road in the Town of Blooming Grove. There is a parking area available for hikers. As you look up towards the tree line, to the right of the lodge, you will see your first blue (looks green to me) blaze. This trail will take you all the way to the letterbox.
• Enter the trail from the right/top corner of the property
• You will continue up across a (dry) stream bed.
• As you wrap around, you will cross the stream bed again. Follow trail around the bend and up through the rock wall.
• You have about a 60 minute walk to the summit from here. You can make it!
• The short pines are a clear sign you are approaching the summit. Notice the abundance of conglomerate rock formations around you.
• You will pass signs for the Long Path.
• As you look out to your left you will see Mt. Rascal in West Point.
• Follow trail down a small down hill; continue along the cliffs to the look out.
• You’ll know it when you see it!
As you look out, to your right, you will see Stewart International Airport, Beaver Dam Lake and the Shawangunks Mountain Ridge (“the gunks”). In front of you is Woodcock Mountain. To your left, you’ll see Callahan-Nannini Quarry. Warning: This is a popular spot on nice days, so you’ll need to be discreet if others are around, so as not to give it away.
• From the highest point on the rock, where you look out, turn around 180 degrees to see the blue (green) blaze on the pine tree.
• At the tree, face southwest. Take 10 paces, going past the tree growing from the rock.
• Look down and you will see a large conglomerate rock, about 6'x4', that broke away from the rest of the rock. Under the left side of the rock hidden behind some smaller rocks, you will find what you seek.
Congratulations!
To get back to the parking area, go back the way you came following the blue (green) trail. It will take about 45 minutes.
