Musquash Conservation Land

Please be aware that some of the trails may be a bit wet and mucky in places. Also be aware also that this land is open to hunters during hunting season so please be careful and don't forget to wear bright clothing.

DIRECTIONS:

From 3A (Lowell Road) in Hudson, NH turn onto Wason Road between Stop&Shop and Market Basket. Go about 1 mile and you will turn RIGHT onto Musquash Road. Heading down Musquash Road driving South, you will pass Cathedral Lane on your right… the entrance to the conservation land will be on your LEFT towards the bottom of a hill along the road. The sign says: Musquash Conservation Land.

Once you have parked, walk down toward the water and enjoy the beautiful bird sanctuary. If you are facing the water you want to turn to your LEFT and take the path closest to the water. There is a sign at the beginning of the path that says: BIRD VIEWING AREA. Walk along the water until you reach two stone benches facing the water. This is a great place for a picnic or just to sit and watch the birds. At the benches the path takes a sharp turn to the left. Keep following the path making sure to look down as well because of tree roots and rocks.

You will go up a small incline until you reach a stone wall. Go over the stone wall where it has fallen down and take a RIGHT onto another path that follows along the wall. You will see that this trail is marked with a yellow vertical line. Follow the yellow trail markers.

You will pass a large broken/fallen tree trunk on your left and then you will have to step over a smaller tree trunk that has fallen across the path. You should now begin to hear the water. You will approach a stream. It’s a wonderful place to stop and enjoy some peace. Go over the wooden bridge across the stream.

You will then have to step over another tree trunk that has fallen across the path. You will see ahead of you a steep rocky incline in the path. There is also a tree marked with a yellow trail marker on the right at the bottom of the steep incline. BEFORE you reach the trail marker and the bottom of the steep incline look over to your right. Take a few steps back if you have to… there is a fantastic big old tree that is forked into two. There is a hollow where the two trees meet at the trunk. Look into where the two trees become one. Down in the secret hollow between the tree trunks and you will find the box.

Here is an extra clue if you are having trouble finding the tree: There is a big fallen tree behind the forked tree. The fallen tree has a big root ball sticking up. Can’t miss it!

As an extra treat, go around to the back of the tree trunk and look down. For those who are children at heart and believe in fairies and such things, enjoy! We encourage you to use your imagination and add anything you’d like (i.e. moss, rocks, pinecones, etc…). Please remember the basic rules: Do not use anything man-made and do not destroy living things. Please use only things that you would find in nature and that have already fallen to the ground. We also encourage leaving some berries or nuts to attract the fairies! ;)

As you leave heading back over the wooden bridge at the stream, you may continue on the yellow trail all the way back out to the parking lot. Or you can turn LEFT back over the fallen stonewall and go back down toward the water. Either way is enjoyable.

Please let us know what you think.
