Difficulty: Easy, but long hike
Location: A 5 mile hike from parking.
Elevation: Flat, but not completely smooth.
Materials: Bring your own stamp pad, log book, stamp.
Challenge: Walking the rail trail to find LB

This box is hidden in a remote area near the village of Cairo, WV.

There are multiple starting points from along the Great Bend Trail bikepath, anywhere from Parkersburg to Clarksburg. However, your goal is at the 31 mile marker on the path, so do the following:

To reach the point, park in downtown Cairo and take the rail trail East from marker 26 (at the iron bridge). See Walking the Dog in Cairo for directions to the departure point. Three miles on, you will pass through the first of three tunnels on the trail.

Alternative Directions: You could start at the McDonalds or Dairy Queen restaurants along Route 50 at Ellenburo, and start walking eastward across the pedestrian overpass about 2 miles until you reach the 31 mile marker.

This is the Dick Bias tunnel, dedicated to the man who is responsible for the rail trail conversion. From the plaque dedicated to him, begin pacing East 55 steps along the trail bed. Turn right, 90 degrees and face the small meadow. Advance 15 steps to a 4"x4" timber stuck in the ground at the end of row of rock boulders. This timber is not treated nor painted like the mile markers.

What you seek is 2 paces back to the west, between rocks, under the rock overhang between the two boulders. (Note: This letterbox has been replanted 4/26/09 after being reported missing. It was gone. Don't know why. This new letterbox is a longer, narrower jar, completely wrapped in camo tape.) NOTE: The logbook incorrectly states "Dick Best". A slip on my part!

Please bring a stamp pad, towel for the jar, pen and your own stamp pad. The stamp is a manufactured foam stamp, not hand-carved. Please reseal all baggies and replace all materials into the hold, being careful not to let the jar roll down the slope.
