(The Six Pack Tales Series Has Six Interlocking Stamps, So Plan Ahead!)

There's a Bonus Personal Traveler Box Too!

The Philadelphia Phillies, having defeated the Brewers (3-1) in the opening playoff series of 2008, felt it was only appropriate to treat their opponents to the excellent beer available in the Philly area. A fair drive into the northern suburbs delivered the teams to Ortino’s North Side with plenty of fine beer on tap. After a couple rounds the Brewers, used to their Old Milwaukee swill, were in no shape to walk, let alone drive. Given the Brewers’ need for recovery, the Phils opted to head off to William Rahmer Park, nearby, to get some batting practice before the arrival of the Dodgers in Philly on Thursday.

The Philadelphia Phanatic, the Phil’s green-feathered gonzo of a mascot, accompanied them to an appropriate park about a mile from North Side to memorialize their victory. As the boys began playing out their practice game, the Phanatic joined in for what seemed to be an episode of its standard silliness.

Chase Utley batted first with a line drive single. The Phanatic trotted from home plate down to first base beside him with characteristically waddle-like paces, its extended behind shaking the entire way.

Then Joe Blanton doubled, and the Phanatic, standing on first, turned and ran straight over 2nd base and well beyond it into left-center field. Apparently, the Phanatic’s interpretation of these hits was having significant bearing on his situational antics. Yet, any Phillies fan will tell you the Phanatic has done stranger things.

When Jayson Werth next hit the ball out of the park, the Phanatic reversed course exactly running backwards in mock fashion covering exactly half the distance he ran during Blanton’s hit. It was now apparent the Phanatic was behaving according to "Jersey" rules.

As the Phils continued to demonstrate their batting prowess throughout the afternoon, the Phanatic continued to run and wiggle its derrière about the field in a seemingly random fashion.

On Dobbs' double, the final hit of the day, the Phanatic disappeared into the woods with particular verve. One might have thought that Shane Victorino had just hit a Grand Slab Homer and the Phanatic was bent on retrieving the ball!

After a short time the Phanatic returned to the field and jogged with the boys back to the North Side to retrieve their Wisconsinian friends and head back to Philly for their attempt to become baseball world champions!

Here was the complete batting record for the afternoon.

Utley – Single
Blanton – Double
Werth – Homerun
Rollins – Single
Victorino – Double
Ruiz – Double
Lidge – Triple
Condrey – Single
Coste – Double
Bruntlett – Single
Stairs – Single
Burrel – Single
Dobbs - Double

Post 2008 World Series Note: Congratulations to all the players for their World Series victory! Philadelphia fans like myself have waited 28 years for a repeat championship!! (And it is quite disappointing that Pat Burrell will not be wearing the #5 jersey for the Phils in 2009.)
