Quicksilver is the old alchemists’ term for mercury. Mercury can build up in animal tissue and in certain levels is deadly. So if I were you I wouldn’t get too carried away eating lots of fish from Clear Lake. Clear the lake may be, but there is also a problem with toxic levels of mercury.

“Mercury in the sediment is taken up by biota and transformed into methyl mercury, that then accumulates in species at higher levels of the food chain. The levels of mercury in tissues of some fish and waterfowl at this lake have exceeded the maximum limits set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The human exposure pathway of greatest concern is the consumption of contaminated fish. The state has issued a health advisory regarding consumption of fish from Clearlake (May 1986). “

To accesss the Quicksilver Letterbox (which actually is closer to a small town called Finley) drive south on Main Street in Lakeport. Soon you will leave the city limits and shortly after hit a four way stop. Stay on that same road veering slightly left. Main Street becomes Soda Bay Road. Don’t stop to gamble. At 4.1 miles from the four way stop turn left onto Park in the direction of Lakeside County Park. Not only should you avoid gambling, but once you’re on Park you should not dally with St. Francis.

When you reach the park drive to the last launching facility, park and get out. Walk to the launch area. Take a little stroll to the west side of the launch passing a bench and walking as far as you can before you have to swim (unless you are Jesus). There you should reach a sign which is largely unreadable unless you’re on the lake. This sign is secured by two posts which are in turn secured by concrete. One side of the concrete is sloppier than the other. The Quicksilver Letterbox is under the sloppy concrete on the north side hugging its roundness behind a couple rocks. Reach in about 6 to 9 inches and there should be your treasure.

Please be discrete, rebox securely closing box carefully and thanks for coming!
