Clues
Box may be inaccessible during winter. Road often closes just beyond ski area parking lot.
From the town of Mammoth Lakes drive up Minaret Road past the ski and recreation area. When faced with your first dilemma, the ‘right’ choice is not to pay the Devil’s Toll. Continue to the vista point at 9265 ft. elevation.
Follow the rocky steps to the scenic platform. Lefty’s search might end in failure; the ‘right’ perspective will be your ticket on. Use your ‘tunnel vision’ to find the peak named after Walter Starr. He’s been etched over, but resides next to Clyde. Take a moment to contemplate the history of these mountains. Mt. Ritter was first climbed by John Muir in 1876!
Be precise but reverse your view to find the dead V.
Follow the small trail to the base of the dead V and stand on the small, flat rock at its base. Turn your gaze in the direction of 40° and look through the tree for the small natural gateway approximately 40 steps away. Proceed to the gateway. Line up the two objects that form the gateway and follow that line a few yards uphill.
The box is waiting under an uprooted tree, covered by several pieces of bark and rock. Be careful when reaching in to remove the box. Please hide the box completely, it has to survive a rough winter up here.
PS. This is the first box our family has placed. Please let us know if we can improve on what we’ve done. Thanks!
