New Ipswich Library Letterbox

The New Ipswich public library, though perhaps a reflection and result of the old intellectual activity of the place, was founded in 1887 by a group of interested people. These people, who were capable of controlling town expenditures, were against spending the necessary funds to sponsor a town library. Though very much of the money for its erection and establishment was earned, a good deal has been generously given by some of the residents and summer people who lived in Boston who had family and friends in town.
The present library was opened in 1895 and was built by the moving spirit of Caroline Francis Barr. The English architecture was copied from a picture of a building that Miss Barr had seen. There is a plaque in the library which is inscribed:

In Memory of Caroline Francis Barr 1835-1922
Whose vision and tireless energy founded this library
and inspired its growth.

Money for the library was raised by summer fairs. Miss Barr, who taught school in Boston, opened her family home and held card parties and piano recitals to raise monies for the library. She was friends with many well known singers of the day who would come to Boston solely to perform in Miss Barr's behalf, to help raise money for her library fund.

If the library is open when you come to find the New Ipswich Letterbox do drop in and see the lovely interior and be sure to say hello to Anne Soini the librarian who gave me permission to hide the letterbox. Altogether it is an ideal village library, in appearance, management and influence.

Directions: Take Route 2 west to Route 13 north to Townsend, Mass. Take a left on Route 119, the right after 2 miles on Route 124 in West Townsend. Go 10 miles to New Ipswich. Turn left onto Main Street (Route 123A). The library is on the immediate left at 6 Main Street.
Check out Historic Barrett House Letterbox (also on this street at 79 Main Street).

Clues: Find the New Ipswich Library and visit it if you can: Mon and Wed 2-8pm, Tues and Fridays 9am-1pm and Sat 9-1 during the school year. Read the plaques and walk along the sidewalk in front of the library. Find the high chimney and go to that side of the building. From the base of the chimney take 10 steps toward the back of the library. You'll arrive at a set of stairs. Look to the left of the stairs under a small stack of rocks and you'll find your treasure. Please rehide carefully as this is a busy area.
