Story:
In June of this year on our annual trip to WHitehall, my husband, children and I befriended a man named "Rick". He was fishing for smelt along the channel from Duck Lake into Lake Michigan (of course my children swarmed the poor man). He told us of a Swans nest on a trail in the park. We took the trail and saw the swan (with babies) in the nest. Very cool spot on a wonderful trail and we wanted to share it with you.

Directions:
When in Whitehall, MI you can take 1 of 2 routes to enter Duck Lake State Park. You can either enter through the large entrance on Scenic Dr. Most of the time you are required to have a pass or have to pay if you enter this way, or you could take a bike ride or walk to the entrance on Michelinda Dr.

When you enter thru Michelinda Dr. way you go to the South until you reach a parking lot with a Large picinic shelter/restroom area at the Southern most end of the lot.

When you enter from Scenic Dr., you'll turn Left after the Ranger/pass check station, take the first left up the hill. Go to the end of that street until you reach a T in the road, Turn right and enter that parking lot at the end. You are near a shelter/Restroom area.

Clues:
Go to the shelter and you'll see a set of steps to the West of it. Go down the steps and to the Left (South) until you reach a small picinic area (without shelter). You'll see a fence that runs along the southern boarder of this area. Follow that Fence to the Eastern most corner and you will notice a small trail entrance. Take that trail staying in the Southern Most direction (there are several connecting trails back there) for about 300 paces (2 steps = 1 pace). You will come to an area where it looks like the trail is going to end (it takes a sharp turn North). STop there.
Look to the SOuth and you should see a dead tree (small-medium in size) running in a N-S diection. Walk to the end and look out at the lake (this is where the Swan's Nest was). To be sure that you're at the right dead tree, in front of you, down a small hill, should be what looks like a downed telephone pole (very smooth and straight wood) in an E-W diection. Look in the end of the dead tree that you found (N-S direction) and you'll find the Swan.

PS- you may also want to check out the "Duck Lake Snapper" also located in the park.

Please email us when you find it.
Thanks and happy "hunting"
