About the hike:

The Province Brook Trail is an easy 1.6 mile hike with only 400 feet elevation gain to Province Pond and a White Mountain National Forest shelter. Cooking, overnight camping, and fires are allowed at the shelter. It took us about one hour with a five and seven-year-old. The pond and shelter are very secluded and beautiful. Moose tracks are everywhere! A wonderful hike for the spring or fall. Beware if you attempt in the summer---bring the bug spray!

Directions:

From the Conway Police Station, travel straight on East Conway Road (will turn into Green Hill Road) for 10.9 miles into Chatham. Turn left onto Peaked Hill Road (.9 miles north of Hurricane Mountain Road). Travel 2.6 miles to the end and park.

Clue:

Province Brook Trail heads northwest along Province Brook on an old logging road. The trail crosses Province Brook on a bridge shortly before reaching the south end of Province Pond on a grassy bank. Turn to the right here and follow a yellow-blazed path along the east shore of the pond to the shelter on the north shore.

PLEASE NOTE: The yellow-blazed trail leaves the logging road and enters the trees on the left. Be on the lookout for a small arrow on a tree to guide you! After you have entered the trees, the path becomes somewhat overgrown and difficult to navigate. You may stay on the trail marked with the yellow blazes, or leave the trail and skirt the pond to the shelter, which you can visually see (the easier option!).

Once you reach the shelter, stand between the shelter and the toilet-signed tree with your back to the pond, facing north. Walk northward (350 degrees) 31 footfalls to a large, triangular-shaped, light gray boulder. On top of the boulder is a skinny pine tree. Look under the roots for “Slow & Steady!”
