Radio’s Lone Ranger “Brace Beemer”

“A fiery horse with the speed of light! A cloud of dust and a hearty ‘Hi-Yo, Silver!’ The Lone Ranger!”

Perhaps radio’s best-remembered drama, The Lone Ranger debuted on WXYZ/Detroit in 1933. The Ranger was a white knight who rode a horse named Sliver, and “with his faithful Indian companion Tonto…led the fight for law and order in the early western United States.”

Few people know that Oxford, Michigan was home to one of the most recognizable voices throughout the nation was that of Brace Beemer, Radio’s Lone Ranger. Beemer lived in Oxford for many years in a large white house on Drahner Rd, and in the 1930’s and 1940’s he rode the train from Oxford to Detroit (Currently Polly Ann Trail) to broadcast his weekly radio program. His house still stands, but if he were alive today he might not recognize his neighborhood.

His collection of Lone Ranger items is on display in the Northeast Oakland Historical Museum in Oxford.

CLUES:

This is a 1 mile round trip hike, easy to moderate terrain, you will need a compass. Please be discreet, this trail is very busy and populated, Bring your own ink, black is best, and please reseal and re-hide well.

Your Lone Ranger adventure begins at Powell Lake Township Park .

From the parking lot follow the cement path pass the pavilion to the black top path turn left, This is where your journey begins.
Follow the trail to a point where you need to make a decision; go the way of Mr. Beemer would have road the train to work. Look for a place where you can rest three and enjoy the view. Continuing on, pass over two boardwalks; at the “Y” go 240 degrees. You will come to a Stop; this is the Polly Ann Trail. Head the way Mr. Beemer would have traveled home. Follow this paved trail to the next paved right, travel this to a “Y” and bare the way of the boardwalk, after crossing the boardwalk, once at another “Y” turn left, continue on this path crossing three more boardwalks. At the end of the third, notice a bench atop a small hill, rest at the bench. Look behind the bench, you will see a trail leading to an opening to a field, just before you enter the opening look to the left and spy a small trail leading into the woods. Follow this trail in about nine paces to where you will soon notice three large oak trees to the left in a row, between the second & third you will spy a fallen tree just to the right lying down behind the oaks, the end of the tree has a large break, here you will find the masked man you seek.

To return to the parking lot continue on the paved trail.
Hope you have enjoyed the small history lesson and hike.
Please rehide well if not better, also this is a high traffic area.
