Our dear doggy loved this creek. He succumbed to illness and has since passed. But in his memory we have left DogGone It! He was always up to a park adventure, a walk, and a wade in the creek – we hope you are too!

From Highway 99 going through Chico, exit at East 1st Avenue going east. Cross the Rio Lindo Channel and go straight through the four-way stop at Manzanita. Here the street name changes from E. 1st Avenue to Mariposa. Continue on Mariposa until you reach the light at East Avenue. At East Avenue go South. Just past the house where our backdraft heroes reside, turn left onto Wildwood Avenue. As you peruse the beautiful landscape ahead, the road makes a 90-degree right hand turn onto Upper Park Road. Continue along this road until you reach 5 Mile Way – where you will make another right. You will find a defined parking area just a ways up on the left.

From the parking lot, cross the creek on the bridge that spans it. Be sure to take in the view both upstream and down. Exit the bridge and head straight to where you meet narrow paved road built for human-powered alternative transportation.

Turn right and follow this ribbon of road along the outer edge of the picnic area. Where the path forks, cross the creek again. Immediately after exiting from the top of the dam, make a descent down to the left to where gravel meets pavement.

Take the first path to the left. Traipse along the woodsy trail, enjoying the sights , sounds, and smells. With two large hooker oak twins in front and a third behind them turn to your left and see a small trail leading under some woody vines.

Take this trail to where it meets a small rocky shore. Cross through the shallow breadth of creek (or cross on the fallen log that was there as of this writing). Upon crossing head downstream to where a root stepped trail leads up.

At the second step, turn to your left. Under a curved log that is just to your right is what you seek behind a camouflage of bark. Be sure to replace the bark or add more if needed to keep this letterbox out of site.
