In 2008, Hez and Grumpy celebrated a few milestones and these boxes were planted in their honor. Due to storm damage, the clues have been updated from their original 2008 posting on this site. The boxes are in their original hiding spots.

Directions:

The boxes are located ont he King Property in Middlefield, CT. From RT 66 East or West turn onto 147 South. After about one mile, turn onto Lake Road at the gas station. Meander past the lake on your left and continue straight up the hill. At the stop sign, when you can go no further, take a left onto Mattabeseck Road and continue straight until you are at the parking area for the dog park and Roman soldiers guard a driveway on your right.

Terrain:
The King Property abuts the southwestern shore of Lake Beseck and heads westerly/southwesterly to the ridge top of Beseck Mountain to the Meriden/Middlefield town line. The trail is moderately steep with loose rock. It gains about 310 feet in elevation and the entire hike is approximately 2 miles, as you will be going up to the Blue Trail and back down.

Clues:

After going around the gate, take a right at the first intersection onto the Yellow Trail. Do not follow the yellow "dog bones." Continue your climb up and up onto an unmarked woods road, passing the left hand turn to continue on Yellow. Soon you will come to an area with a four-sister on your left and a four-sister ahead on your right. Behind the sisters on your left is Hez's Birthday Horse.

Continue uphill on the woods road. You will come to a section where ATVs have created a muddy intersection. Continue as straight as you can through this area and then up and over some slick rock onto the Blue Trail. At the intersection of the Blue Trail is the remains of a car on your right. From this point, count 81 paces to a small rock outcropping on your right. Behind this outcropping near what I think is a Chestnut Oak and under some rocks is Grumpy's Birthday Bear.

Return the way you came down the slick rock, through the ATV intersection and down by Hez's box and to Yellow which will turn right uphill. Follow Yellow and as it turns downhill you might want to visit Who's with Grumpy. Shortly you will see a beech tree on your right with 88 carved into it. Ahead is another beech with what looks like a paw mark carved into it. Behind this tree is Hez and Grumpy's Anniversary Box.

Continue down Yellow through the Boy Scout camping area and past the dog park on the right. At the intersection take a left on the trail and very shortly you are at the parking lot.
