Humbug Mountain State Park is approximately 5 miles south of Port Orford, Oregon. We’ve camped here with our family for years. Our kids always thought a couple of rocks in the ocean looked a lot like a whale. Take a few minutes to go out to Humbug Beach and you’ll see exactly which ones we mean.

The hike is 1 mile in and 1 mile out, with a 500+ elevation gain, so it’s a good workout. The trail is well-marked and well maintained.

To get to the stamp, either park at the trailhead for Humbug Mountain or if you are in the campground, find the path that goes under Highway 101, which will put you right on the trail. Walk along the trail for approximately 1 mile until you see where east meets west. Once you’ve reached this spot, stand with your back to the back of the sign and look uphill on the west trail. Just to the left you will see three trees joined at the base. You will find the whale in the heart of the left-most tree.

If you choose to continue to the summit, take a few minutes to enjoy the peek-a-boo views of the ocean on the west trail. The east trail is a little longer, but an easier incline, with some very interesting forest-scapes throughout. The summit is 1754 feet. There’s a nice bench to have a picnic, but not much in the way of an ocean view. Though there IS another letterbox at the top of Humbug! Happy hunting!
