Captain Carlton’s Treasure
Captain Peter Carlton stood astride the large stone on his mountain, surveying the hills and valleys in the distance, debating the best route to follow so as to escape the party sent to follow him. He thought his disappearance would only cause a minor disturbance and did not expect the seafarers to follow him this far inland. He underestimated Blackbeards paranoia and determination that all the silver was meant for one man, and it was not Peter Carlton.
He had been excited and enthralled in the beginning of raising the silver and taking it to safe portage that all could share in the wealth. Blackbeard quickly showed signs of not fulfilling this destiny, so Peter made plans to end this partnership sooner, rather than later.
He grabbed what silver he could carry comfortably and headed east into the wilds of Pennsylvania above the small city that would one day be capital of the state. He labored with the extra weight of the silver, but knew it would provide and keep him save from the determination of Blackbeard.
He walked the ridge for miles to this spot and was contented that he had not heard the sounds of a posse following him, until today. He needed to stay alive and keep his treasure safe.
He ran up the stone steps and continued right on the ridge. Running down and past a rock wall on the left. Breathing heavily he shortly ran back up to ridge and stopped. He heard his pursuers closing in behind him.
He knew he and the treasure must hide. He saw a large dead “Y” tree on the left and ran to it for protection. He thought the south west side of the rock behind it would offer better protection and crawled down to hide. He found a spot to hide his treasure and thought it would be best to reclaim it at another time.
The posse passed and Peter thought for his own good he should head back towards the Susquehanna and look for a safer route to his future.
