Hike: 1.2 miles round trip, about 30 minutes each way. 400' altitude gain.
A steep climb, with some difficult sections.
We think good hiking shoes are a necessity, but we've seen people do this in flip-flops and Crocs.
This is 8-year-old Jo's favorite hike. Middle-aged Lo and Mo usually have trouble keeping up with him.

From the AMC Visitors' Center in Pinkham Notch, cross the highway towards the "Appalachian Trail" sign, watching carefully for traffic. Look right to find the trailhead for the Lost Pond Trail. Follow the Lost Pond Trail over some logs across a marsh, and across a narrow wooden bridge, and then follow the trail as it turns right after the bridge. Very shortly after this (some directions say "immediately"; we don't think so), turn left and uphill onto the Square Ledge Trail. Stop and sign in at the box labelled "ATTENTION TRAIL USERS". If you don't see this box, you've probably turned too far left, and are heading up a stream bed.

Continue uphill following the Square Ledge Trail, passing the side trail to Lady's Lookout, crossing the Square Ledge Ski Trail, and going under Hanging Rock, until you reach Square Ledge. From the base of Square Ledge, there's a steep climb scrambling over rocks along the right-hand side of the ledge. On weekends when the weather is good, you'll probably see groups of rock climbers going directly up the side of the ledge.

After you get to the top of the rock climb, take a sharp left turn to follow the trail out onto the ledge.

After enjoying the view and a snack (careful not to fall off), turn back off the ledge. As soon as you step off the rock, and before going over another section of rock, turn left and slightly uphill into the woods. A short way in front of you is a grey birch with four trunks (it looks like it has six trunks, but one of them is dead, and another is actually a small conifer behind the birch). The box is under a rock behind these trunks.

[We've been told that the logbook is full. An injury has made us unable to hike up to Square Ledge this year; if someone would like to place a fresh logbook in the box, we'd be very grateful. Thanks.]
