The Hummingbird Festival takes place in August at the River Lake Inn Restaurant near Colon. Hummingbirds are captured and banded - very cool to watch - for a small fee you can even hold one in your hand for a moment as it is released.
Even if you don't make it to the festival, it's still a cool place to go. Good food, private label seasonal wines, beautiful gardens, nature trail, and of course, lots of hummingbirds. The dining room is all windows, with lots of feeders, so you can watch them as you dine. Go to riverlakeinn.com for hours, info, and a MAP. To see cool hummingbird photos go to http://mihummingbirdguy.blogspot.com/
MomCat & Sun-without Dawg-no pets please! enjoyed lunch first. After dining and bird watching, strolled thru the hummingbird garden, checked out the koi pond, followed the walk-way towards the gift shop. There are signs pointing Butterfly Garden to the right, Bluebird Trail to the left.
Suggest checking out the Butterfly Gardens-they are beautiful (walk off that lunch!) then take the Bluebird Trail. Shortly, you come to a bench for a rest and a good place for stamping. An arc of woody ornamentals identified with a sign as Rose of Sharon. Keep following the trail. Shortly you will come to another grouping of woody ornamentals, identified by sign as "Indian Magic". Flowering Crabapples. At approx. 240 degrees and 10 PACES from that sign are 3 evergreens, 2 pines and a fir.
The box is at the base of the pine to the right, covered in needles.
Please, be discreet, re-hide well, the area is highly maintained with lots of visitors.
