The Po Lin (“Precious Lotus”) Monastery is set amid spectacular mountain scenery on the 1,706 foot high Ngong Ping plateau. There you will find the world’s tallest bronze statue of the seated Buddha which is 111 feet high and weighs approximately 550,000 pounds. Cast in China and taking over 10 years to complete, it was unveiled in 1993.

Besides attracting Buddhists from all over Asia, the splendid figure with its compelling presence almost instantly transformed the remote Po Lin Monastery with its devout monks into a must-visit on tourist schedules. Visitors can climb the 268 steps to reach the platform where the Buddha is seated.

Besides admiring the massive statue there is also much to see and do at the monastery itself with its various figures of gods and other colorful aspects of the Buddhist religion. You can also enjoy a vegetarian lunch prepared by monks.

To get there, you have a few options.
Take the MTR Tung Chung Line to Tung Chung Station (Hong Kong Station to Tung Chung Station requires approximately 35 minutes).
From there you can either take the scenic Ngong Ping Cable Car to Ngong Ping Village, explore the village a little and take the short walk to the Big Buddha (can’t miss it!); or from the Tung Chung Station, you can take the New Lantau Bus number 23 to Ngong Pine (approximately 50 minutes). That’s a real thrill ride!

If you want to take the ferry across, from Central Pier No. 6 (near Central's Star Ferry Pier or MTR's Hong Kong Station), catch a ferry to Lantau Island's Mui Wo (Fast Ferry takes 40 minutes, Normal Ferry takes 60 minutes). At Mui Wo, take New Lantau Bus No. 2 to Ngong Ping (approximately 50 minutes).

Clues:
Buddha said, “A good path is free from torture and groaning and suffering”, so we will accommodate this and make a good path to the hidden treasure for you.

After being awed by the statue of Buddha, travel down the path past the Tea Garden Restaurant, heading toward the Wisdom Path. If you are interested in the history and meaning of the path, it can be found at http://www.tourism.gov.hk/english/current/current_heart.html.
When you arrive at the intersection of the trailheads and the Wisdom Path, locate a sign for the Picnic Site. To the immediate left of this sign is a trail which has sign posts describing various types of vegetation. Count six signs up the path and stop at the one that describes Common Melastoma. Look to the opposite (left) side of the path. You will see a very small boulder between two trees. Behind this boulder on the side farthest from the trail covered by other rocks and some leaves, you will find the hidden treasure. Take care when extricating the box. If you pass the sign for Wild Coffee, you have gone three steps too far.
Be very wary of muggles – this is a very popular visitor site
