Park on Ferry at Woodward Avenue. Wayne State University annually educates 33,000 students who stroll through 203 acres of landscaped walkways and gathering spots.

Travel past the Cass entrance of the Detroit Public Library, decorated with the mural “The River of Knowledge.” The Reuther Library holds extensive archives of the modern labor movement and the Yamasaki designed Prentis Building and Deroy Auditorium is considered to be a modern take on a medieval castle, with its suggested Gothic patterning and surrounding moat.

Old Main, on the corner of Cass and Warren, began as the home of Detroit Central High School in 1896. Further south, the Hilberry Theater was originally a church for the Christian Scientists, and was purchased by the university in 1961 for conversion into a theater.

Travel back to Gullen Mall and the Frederick Linsell House, one of the first homes the university occupied when it began its expansion in the 1930s and a reminder of the area’s pre-urban fabric. Further north, the McGregor Memorial Conference Center is believed by many to be among Detroit’s finest buildings.

Yamasaki designed the two-story pavilion to include a sunken garden and reflecting pool. Turn left at the crossing plane sculpture to find a letterbox hidden in the southern exposure of Shapero Hall.
