Old Southeast Church

Along Route 22 , just north of Route 312, is the area known as Doanesburg. It was named for the Doane family, early settlers from Cape Cod in the 1700’s. An historic building, the Old Southeast Church was built there by a handful of Presbyterians in the 1700’s. Members of the congregation resided in the hamlets of Milltown, Southeast Center, Dykemans, DeForest Corners and Foggintown (then known as Gayville).

The Reverend Elisha Kent was the first resident pastor in the 1740’s, but the church he first served was a log building on the present Farm to Market Road opposite the Brewster schools. Probably for the convenience of Rev. Kent, a second log church was erected near his home on Route 22 where the Old Southeast Church stands today. A frame building followed the log structure and the present building was erected in 1794.

The minister’s son, Moss Kent, became a prominent lawyer, and was influential in setting up the Legislature of our state after the Revolution. His grandson, James Kent, born in 1763, became the first Chancellor of the State of New York. In 1800, he was part of a two man team that revised the statutes of the state. Between 1826 and 1830, he produced “ Commentaries on American Law” which rivals the work of England’s Blackstone. He is a prominent figure in the annals of Southeast.

Also on this property is the Doanesburg Schoolhouse. Dating to the early 19th century, this one-room schoolhouse functioned as a school into the 1940's.

DIRECTIONS: I 684 North to Rte 22 North. Pass the A&P Fresh Mart on your left. Go through the intersection at Rte 312 traffic light (Towne Center Shopping center to your right). Across from the Sunoco gas station and just before the state trooper barracks on your right is the driveway. It’s a very sharp right turn, and easy to miss. If you pass the state trooper barracks , you just missed it.

From I 84 get off at exit 19. Make a left onto Rte 312. Follow to the end (Towne Center shopping center with a McDonald’s will be across the street). Make a left at this light onto Rte 22. Look for the driveway across form a Sunoco gas station and just before the state trooper barracks. It is a sharp right turn and easy to miss. If you pass the state trooper barracks, you just missed it.

TO FIND THE LETTERBOX:
Park in front of the church. On either side of the front steps is a large maple tree. Facing the building, walk to the one on the left. To the left of this tree is a large stone slab which is the top of a rock wall. Walk around the wall to the left. Under this slab, hidden by smaller rocks, is the letterbox. Zip all bags and make sure the lid is on tight. Please re-hide with the same rocks, making sure that the box cannot be seen at any angle.

Note: ***Please, please use a stick to poke around in stone walls before putting your hand in. We have many snakes in the area, and a few of them are venomous. The most dangerous time is spring, when the snakes may not yet have come out after wintering over.
