~After deciding to carve a box for the recent Cedar Hill Cemetery Scavenger Hunt I learned a lot about one Gilbert Heublein and his family business.

I had known about the tower in Simsbury high atop Talcott Mountain, but that was about all. I did not know anything about his business ventures-neither what sustained the company during Prohibition or what set the company apart after Prohibition ended.

If you would like to find out, come along for an adventure full of magnificent views and wonderful history.

There is no ink in this box, but red and silver would do nicely.

Start your journey at Talcott Mountain State Park. The entrance is located off of route 185 in Simsbury. It is on the left just after passing the entrance for Penwood State Park (full of many wonderful boxes too!) on the right.

After parking head up the yellow Tower Trail. It is clearly marked as the way to Heubelin Tower.

You will go pretty much uphill the whole way. You are going to the top of a mountain after all 8-)

You will come to some amazing vistas that I hope you take the time to enjoy. They are beautiful any time of year.

Continue on until you come to the beautiful tower. Be sure to go up to the top if you have planned your trip in May-Oct when it is generally open. It is well worth the trip up those many steps to see the view.

After enjoying the view, continue away from the tower on the blue Metacomet trail in a southerly direction. Pass a picnic area or two. The pavilion gives a gorgeous view also.

After passing the last seating area you will be on the lookout for a chain link fence on your left. Quickly after passing this, you will come to a chest high rock outcropping on your left.

Stop here next to the good size Oak tree. Turn left to face it and then walk up along the right side of it between the rocks for ~ 6 steps.

Stop, turn left and look in the split of the rock for the "new Whiskey".
It was billed as this as so many Americans had been turned off by the "homemade" stuff during Prohibition. It was a great marketing ploy.

Please be sure to recover this box well.

Flutterby~
