Difficulty Level: Easy to Moderate

Time: Approximately 1 hour total

This scenic trail goes around Green Mountain Lake, at Lakeside Park in Pawling, NY. This park was formerly the Holiday Hills YMCA. The park is closed to the public during summer months until after 2:30 due to summer camp. It will take you on a paved roadway, as well as through the woods over paths covered in pine needles. You might want to make an afternoon of the visit, as there are picnic and grilling facilities, as well as swimming during the summer months when a lifeguard is on duty.

Upon entering the park, there will be a gatehouse on the right. Technically, the park is free to Pawling Recreation members and town residents. If there happens to be someone at the gate, if you simply tell them you are going for a walk, they will probably let you through at no charge. There is a slight chance they may ask for a $15 fee, but this is not likely.

Address and Directions: 2 Lakeside Drive, Pawling, NY 12564.

From Rt. 22: Take Corbin Road (on the left coming from the south, on the right coming from the north). Continue over tracks to an intersection. Lakeside Park will be across the intersection immediately to the right.

From Rt. 55: After coming down a hill, pass Rt. 292 on your right. Take a left onto Old Rt. 55. Follow until you see a small lake on your left (Edward R. Murrow Park). Take a left onto Lakeside Drive. Follow until an intersection. Lakeside Park will be on your left.

Park in the parking lot immediately on the left. Start walking on the roadway toward the lake, which will be on your right. Follow the road past the Pawling Central Schools Administrative Offices. The roadway will become gated off for vehicles. Walk through. Cross over a rock wall bridge and continue along the roadway until you cross another rock wall bridge. Just over the bridge, take a right onto a dirt path through the woods. You will come to a Y. Stay right. When you get to the shore, take the path to the left. Continue along this path; the lake will be close by on your right. When you see an interesting, bare, curved pine tree on the right close to shore, you are halfway around the lake. When you come to a split in the path, take a right. You will go up a short steep hill. At the top, take a right. The path will become very narrow at this point. When the trail opens up slightly close to the water, you will see twin trees on the right at the shore joined together at the bottom forming a V. There will be three disc shaped rocks crossing the path. On the left you will see a five foot tall rock as if standing on its edge. The letterbox will be tucked in the crevices behind it. After its found, please place the rocks back the way they were found so the box can not be seen from the path.

Continue in the direction you were going. After a steep incline, you can go left uphill or right down the hill. You can choose either way; both are steep at points and will meet up shortly. At the edge of the woods, you will see a gray house on the right. Walk toward the roadway and continue toward the parking lot past cottages and an A frame building on the left.

We hope you enjoy the scenery!
