There was once a sophisticated young lady from Canton who loved to wear big red hats. She was pretty, prim and proper. Our little lady in red was very trim and thin and she wanted to keep her lovely figure in shape so she could attract a sophisticated young man one day. She never ran or made much noise. She didn’t think it was proper! She didn’t like to work out in stuffy gyms, especially since she thought it was unsophisticated and improper to perspire in public… particularly in mixed company! Her favorite exercise was taking long private walks along lovely nature trails in the peaceful outdoors, watching the birds and butterflies flit along beside her. Whenever she’d go for a walk, she’d daintily place a big floppy red hat on her head to protect her fair skin from the sun. One of her favorite nature trails for her lovely walks is the Lower River Rouge Recreation trail north of Michigan Avenue, off Morton Taylor Road. The Lady in Red would start her dainty walks from the trail to the right of the map. If she tired quickly, she would sit for a while on the lovely brown concrete bench that she longingly remembers used to match her favorite hat perfectly. Once she was ready to continue walking, she’d head off to the right for a mere 60 steps before turning to the left. She walked carefully along, stopping along the bridge to enjoy the lovely river flowing by serenely. What a peaceful day, she thought! What could be better than this? After awhile, she continued along the way, crossing the intersection and sitting on another lovely brown concrete bench for a bit. She was so enjoying the peaceful day, watching the birds all around. Time to continue her peaceful dainty walk. She went on her way about 50 steps, curving to the left a little as she's walked. All of a sudden, she stopped! She saw the cutest young man she’d ever seen in her life! He was hiking along a smaller trail and just ducked into the trees off to her left! Oh My! She thought! What a handsome man! And he was wearing a red hat, too! It was the exact same shade as hers. She had to meet him! She was in such a tizzy, she forgot all her decorum, her manners, her prissiness! She forgot to be dainty and proper! She did something she never would have dreamed of before…. she ran off into the woods after this man! The Lady in Red had to meet him! He was the one she’d been waiting for all this time! She ran down the curving thin trail, looking off into the trees to see where he had gone. She was confused and concerned and upset that she seemed to have lost sight of this dreamy young man! She hoped she would catch up to him! After a short while, she saw a split in the trail ahead! Oh no! She was worried about which way to go! She didn’t want to lose him. Which way, she thought!? But, just a mere 4 steps before the split, she was startled by a cracking noise off to her right! She jumped! She gasped! She was overwhelmed and overjoyed! There he was! The handsome young man was resting off the side of the trail! He was leaning casually against a multi-trunked tree. She was flustered and couldn’t seem to get a good count on the trunks, but she thought it was about 3 bigger trunks and several smaller ones, too. She had more important things to do! She had to meet this man! She beamed at him with her most lovely smile and sweetly said hello. As they introduced themselves and talked and talked, she did her best to regain her composure. But, she was so flustered and beside herself, she accidentally dropped her lovely red hat down between the trunks of the tree while they were talking! (Maybe you could go find it for her?) When the Lady in Red and her new beau decided to go sit down for a bit, they continued along the way they had been heading… they decided to take the “high road” split on the right. Just past the little dip in the trail, there was a small offshoot trail that they ducked through to return to the main walking trail and turned right. They sat for a while on the lovely brown concrete bench to the left, down by the trail to the wetlands overlook. When they were fully rested, they decided to head east down the main trail to return to their cars. They went to dinner, fell in love and lived happily ever after in matching big red hats.
