One day Chthiker and I were coming down the blue trail on Beseck Mountain toward the parking area at Black Pond. On our way down we passed a young girl on her way up. When we got down to the parking lot, we looked back up the mountain and much to our amazement there was the same young girl dancing on the first overlook. With her hands and arms raised over her head, she was swaying to some music only she could hear. Mesmerized and afraid for her well being, we could only watch as she swayed and danced on that ledge. It seemed an eternity until her music stopped and she turned away from the ledge and made her way back down the trail.

This box is for her, the unknown girl who performed for us one summer evening and to the dancing spirit within her.

To Black Pond
From the West take Route 691 East. Take a right onto the Preston Avenue Exit. At the end of exit take a right and at first light take a left onto East Main Street. Continue on East Main Street until you see the sign for Black Pond.
From the East take Route 66 towards Meriden. Take the East Main Street Meriden Exit. This will be a left side exit. Once on the exit you will need to take a very sharp left directly after the overpass. You will see the sign for Black Pond. Continue down road to parking area.

From the parking lot take the trail up the hill to the blue trail. Continue up, going over several areas of slick rock as you get closer to the overlook. At the first big overlook, where you can easily see the parking lot, you will come into a somewhat open area with a clump of trees on the left. I believe these are cherry trees with a small oak in there somewhere. One of these small trees is wearing a blue blaze. As you pass by and around the clump of trees you will see a cedar on the left and an unmarked trail just past the cedar. Take about 14 paces, stop, look to your right and you will see a double snag ( 2013-snag has fallen over, there is only a 4.5 foot double stump left) about 20 feet off trail. One half is larger than the other. Look under the large rock.

At this point you are also close to Black Pond/Black Snake.

From here you can turn around and go back to your car, or you can continue on to the other boxes that are along the blue trail. If you continue on to do all the boxes on the blue trail I would suggest spotting a car on route 68 in Durham.
