Sabattus Mountain is a pleasant hike in Center Lovell, Maine. The view from the south facing ledge is stunning considering the lower elevation of the Mountain. (around 1200 feet)
Take the Sabattus Road in Center Lovell, Maine to the Sabattus Trail Road (gravel) on the right in about ½ to ¾ of a mile you will see the sign and parking area for the Sabattus Mountain trail head.
Shortly after you start up the trial you will come to where the loop splits take the right loop (actually straight ahead). After about a ¾ mile climb (one moderately steep section which young children can make easily) you will reach the site of the former fire tower (four concrete footings) Caution is advised in this area as the ledges are abrupt and drop 200 feet+ in the valley below. Enjoy the view of the countryside from Portland to the southeast, Pleasant Mountain to the south around to the Baldfaces and Mount Washington to the west.
To find the letterbox follow the loop trail to the left (east) at the fire tower site for approximately 125 yards to a unique white granite outcropping. The trail bears to the left around the outcropping. After the white granite outcropping, walk along the trail until you see a tree with a yellow blaze in the middle of the trail. Walk 8-10 paces along he trail beyond this tree to a large Oak tree on the left. Turn to the 90 degrees right and look into the woods and you will see a clump of three maples 10 yards or so into the woods. At the base of the first maple you will find the letterbox underneath some bark and two stones. Please be sure to return and cover the letterbox well as this is a popular trail and there is a geocache box also hidden in the area.
