Driving Directions:
Rt. 2 East or West - take exit 16 for Rt. 149 towards Westchester and Moodus. Turn right at the bottom of the exit onto Rt. 149/Westchester Rd. and then right on River Rd., about 1.5 miles past the exit. Follow River Rd. past Ponemah Cemetery, to where River Rd. intersects with South Rd. There is a sign on the left for the Salmon River Trout Management Area. Be careful; it’s easy to miss! Turn left onto the access road and park in the parking lot on the right.

This letterbox is one of many along the Airline Trail.

Once you've parked, find the trail map toward the edge of the parking lot. To the right of the trail map is a short path leading up a steep hill. Don’t use the larger access road running under the bridge.

The short path will intersect with the main trail, forming a T. Head right on the main trail. Pass through one area where the rock has been blasted out, creating walls of stone on either side. Soon after, on the right, three small streams will intersect and pass under the trail through a drainage culvert.

On the left hand side of the trail is a small, concrete wall that bridges the drainage pipe. As you stand on that wall, take a heading of 215 degrees, sighting a large boulder on that line.

Walk to the large boulder. It marks the beginning of a line of boulders tumbled together creating a large wall of rock. Walk to the last, and largest, boulder in this wall. The letterbox is behind this boulder.

To reach it, turn left on a small path just beyond the large boulder. After going steeply up for about 3 feet, it turns down, and you will see a small, twin-sister tree ahead of you on the right. Up and to the left, behind the large boulder, an evergreen tree guards the crevice where the letterbox is hidden.

It may be easiest to go around to the other side of the tree before climbing up to get the box. It is under a pile of rocks inside the crevice. Thank you for re-hiding it well!
