July through August is Blueberry time in Michigan. Lowbush blueberries are different than the highbush blueberries grown commercially in Michigan. Lowbush blueberries grow wild in Northern Michigan and across the Upper Peninsula. The harvest lasts for weeks. Berry season slowly moves northward through the state, with the Black Lake area season ripening from mid-July to mid-August. Blueberries prefer an acidic soil. The wild ones are usually found in sandy soil near lakes and forest openings.

According to the State of Michigan Department of Agriculture website; "look for firm, plump berries that have a powdery, grayish-blue color. To prevent fresh berries from turning soft, wash them just before eating. When storing, wrap tightly and refrigerate. Do not wash them before freezing. If washed, they turn into a solid form and become mushy upon thawing. Instead, blueberries should be frozen so they pour individually from an airtight bag or container.

[Blueberries for Sal: Kuplink, kuplank, kuplunk go the blueberries into the pail of a little girl named Sal who--try as she might--just can't seem to pick as fast as she eats. Robert McCloskey's classic is a magical tale of the irrepressible curiosity--not to mention appetite--of youth. Sal and her mother set off in search of blueberries for the winter at the same time as a mother bear and her cub. A quiet comedy of errors ensues when the young ones wander off and absentmindedly trail the wrong mothers.
We enjoyed this story as children, and now share it with our kids as we head into the woods in July. Look for it on Amazon or at your library.]

From Onaway, go North on Highway 211; turn west on North Allis Highway. At the 4 way stop, continue straight through onto South Black River Road. Turn onto Red Bridge Road – a dirt fire road. Park in the Red Bridge ORV trailhead parking lot. From the boulder at the southeast corner of the parking area, look straight into the woods; locate the wooden hand reaching up. Go around behind and look in between the fingers for the treasure.

Look at the low growing bushes in the area for the additional prize – blueberries mid-July to mid-August. Continuing on Red Bridge Road look off the roadsides for more drifts of bushes.
