Hummingbirds are the tiniest and most fascinating birds. The early Spanish explorers called them Joyas Volardores or flying jewels!
Facts:
*Hummingbirds require lots of energy. They have the fastest wing beats of any bird and their hearts beat up to 1260 beats per minute.
*They can reach speeds that average 25-30 mph, and can dive up to 60 mph.
*Hummingbirds feed through a long, tube-like tongue that dart into the flower for nectar.
*Many species migrate. Ruby-throats make a 2,000 mile journey between Canada and Panama. Including a non-stop flight of 500 miles over the Gulf of Mexico!
*They are very territorial and will aggressively protect nectar sources.
*Hummingbirds can rotate each of its wings in a circle, allowing them to be the only bird which can fly forwards, backwards, up, down, sideways or sit in sheer space. They can even fly short distances upside down!
*At this box, there is a hummingbird feeder.(seasonal) Hopefully, you will be able to enjoying viewing some!
CLUES:
Go to downtown Eagle Nest, NM on Hwy 64
In the middle of town, you will see two wagon wheels. In between the wheels is a "Lost Eagle RV park" sign about 15 feet high on the south side of the road.
Go to the North pole under the sign and take a compass reading at 210 degrees.
Walk 40 steps at this heading.
Look behind a small sign on the right side of the pine tree.
The box is located under a pile of rocks at the base of the small sign.
(The owners of the RV park are familiar with letterboxing and know visitors will be looking for this box) Enjoy!
