Down for maintenance.
The Clonfert mermaid is a small raised 15th century image on the wall of Clonfert Cathedral in Clonfert, Co. Galway, Ireland. It is a curious image viewed from today’s standards of church art where bare chested females, half fish or not, are not in vogue. She carries what appears to be a mirror in her left hand and in her right a book raised high. Presumably this book is a bible and the Clonfert mermaid is up to a bit of proselytyzing. The original church, 563 a.d., was established by Brendan the Navigator and he is buried in the yard.

On your way north from Point Arena on 101 and in the direction of Manchester turn toward the sea and follow Stonesboro Road to its termination. Pack it in, pack it out and stick to the main path. Keep your eyes open and look for the first sight of the Pacific Ocean to your right. Keep on moving until the exact moment you can see Point Arena Lighthouse on your left. At that instant walk about 15 steps more. Take a left on the small path. When you reach the short, wide, windswept pine you will also be joining another small path. Head west on that path beginning at the pine for about 17 steps and a lupine bush. Proceed to the very next lupine bush south, about 5 steps. The Clonfert Mermaid Letterbox is under that bush having completed her journey from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean.
Thanks for coming.
