9/10/08- THIS PROPERTY IS NOW POSTED "NO TRESSPASSING" so please don't attempt to find letterbox. We hope property will be transfered to a new owner and be re-opened within one year. Sorry-

This letter box is hidden at the site of a WWII observation tower, Pulpit Rock Tower.

Proceed on Route 1A (Ocean Blvd) in Rye. Approximately 1/2 mi north of Wallis Sands State Beach turn left (West) on to Neptune Dr. After second house on the right, pull over at wide spot in road. The trail to Pulpit Rock Tower goes off to the right just before the large rock indicating the entrance to a private driveway of the last house on the street. There is a chain across the path, just step over it and proceed up the trail to the tower.

Go around the tower to the rear. Look for a large rock. The letterbox is hidden under the right rear corner of the rock, under some stones.

Please put back the stones after you replace the letterbox to keep it hidden.

Bug spray is recommended. Watch out for the broken glass at base of tower.

Pulpit Rock Tower was built in 1943 to assist in the World War II defense of the New Hampshire seacoast including the deep water port of Portsmouth and its navy yard. It is an eight story cylindrical reinforced concrete tower and assisted with the aiming of heavy seacoast gun batteries located at various forts on the Seacoast.

Pulpit Rock Tower is presently closed to the public. A local preservation group, Friends of Pulpit Rock Tower is hoping to restore and preserve the tower and open it to the public in a limited manner. More information is available inside the letter box. Happy Hunting!
