The “Syt u ation “
Placed by Butterfly
Location : Walden Nature Preserve
In Salem, CT.
Rated : Easy walking, about 3 miles total.
Number of boxes : 5
Please note: The Nature Preserve does not welcome dogs. Sorry
This is a true story--well almost true . It all started because my favorite Cat Birds Sydney and Sybill were having
a spat, sort of a Cat fight, if you know what I mean. Sydney took off with a flutter and Sybill flew with me to the
Inn at the Beginning. As luck would have it, a Cat bird Hitch Hiker named Sylly was there. The birds struck up
a friendship and Sylly flew home with us. I thought the two girls were having such fun until Sylly took off
Hitch Hiking again. Psychokiwi told me that Sylly was her male Cat bird. A-Ha- so now Sybill is building a
nest and Sydney has come home. We have a Syt u ation !!

Clues: To find Sybills nest and see what happened, find the new Walden Nature Preserve in Salem. From the
intersection of Rte 85 and 82 - travel north on Rte. 85 to Hagen Road turn left then quick right up onto the
grass parking lot. A map board is there to plot out your hike. There are more boxes in this preserve.[Hint ] Find
the beginning of the Red Trail by crossing the field on a mowed path and into the woods There are many wild
flowers and birds to enjoy in the Preserve and a pond with ducks. On the Red Trail, in about one mile, cross a
small river [no wet feet here] and turn left onto the yellow trail . If you find yourself out along a field, you have
missed the yellow turn. With the leaves out, watch for the trail markers. Pass through a pine forest and at the
intersection, turn left onto the Pink [lavender?] trail. Pass by a great huge split rock and the trail takes a hair pin
turn to the right. Up a small rise, stand on a smooth rock in the middle of the trail and look due south. Take 8
steps to find Sybill’s nest hidden on the south side of a rock.
Congratulations to the parents [?] the babies have hatched. To find the first baby, continue on the Pink trail. A
stone wall will be off on the left and up a tiny hill is a tall large Pine tree growing on the left [East ]of the trail.
Stop there. Count back 15 steps , look east. Over the wall are two large flat rocks. On this side of the wall is a
stump . Between the wall and the stump is the baby Syssy, not far from Mom.!!
The Pink trail soon leaves this wide ‘road’ turning right and begins to twist and turn into beautiful woods. Soon
on the right is a great ledge and a stump . Stop and about 300 degrees up on the ledge in the opening facing the
trail are Sydney and Sybill. Please hide well so they do not peek out !
Continue on the Pink trail. Not far from Mom and Dad is Sybilina. Look for a Mae West Tree up on a ‘stage’ on
the right side of the trail. Climb up~~stand in front of Mae West and due south across the trail take about 9 steps
to find Sybilina. She is tucked into the crack behind a trap door.
Back on the trail and the exciting part is to cross a small wet area. someday maybe a bridge will be here ?? but Splish splash gets you across wet and muddy, but fun.NOTE - box chekc Nov.2011 - bridge is there .~Stay on the pink trail , avoid un marked trails and back on a wider trail. At the yellow intersection, turn left.. Now on the Yellow
Trail, watch in the woods to the right for a huge “horse” tree. Climb up and take a ride and maybe ‘go batty’.
From the neck of the ‘horse’ take 25 steps at 280 degrees to a hollow tree. There you will find brave Sybley far
from Mom and Dad, but happy. Tuck him back in well.
Continue on Yellow a short way , down new steps and right onto Red, past a great rock hill on your right as you
continue on Red, over that same river and quite soon as Steve , Heidi and Madras suggest, "Stop at the Big Rock
and ask for directions (with so few gas stations in Salem, sometimes you have to improvise!). You will likely
have to read closely, but surely you will find further information about a long lost Catbird relative lurking along
the brook." Getting the directions you might want, will take you on another short adventure, then return back
onto the Red Trail and back to the parking lot.
Hope you enjoy this new Preserve.
