GOOD DOG LETTERBOX:
This letterbox is a tribute to my dog, Audrey, who recently succumbed to a long term illness. She was a good dog. The Good Dog Letterbox is dedicated to all good dogs, and the people who love them. It is hidden in Veterans Memorial Park, also known as Daniel Nimham Park, in the town of Kent, NY. Audrey was in many 4-H dog shows here, and was loved by the 4-Hers who handled her. Also, the park is used frequently by clubs for their dog obedience or agility meets, as well as the Putnam Humane Society Walkathon, so the park sees many dogs and handlers.

To get to Veterans Memorial Park, take I684 to I84 West. Get off at exit 19, and make a right onto Rte 312. Go to the end and make a right turn at the light. This is Rte 6. Take this through three traffic lights, and make a right at the fourth light, which is on the top of a hill, and next to Reed Memorial Library. Go to the next light and make a left onto Rte 301. Follow this over Carver Bridge, which is the causeway that runs through the reservoir. As soon as you cross, make a right turn onto Gypsy Trail Road. Go down this a road about a mile and the upper park will be on your right. This is Chapel Lane.

From the Taconic, get off at Carmel/Cold Spring exit. Follow Rte 301 East for 10 miles. Turn left on Gypsy Trail Road. Follow directions above.

The gate to the park is usually locked, unless there is an event going on. Park your car in front of the gate. At the beginning of Chapel Lane, visit the memorial to Daniel Nimham, who was chief of the Wappinger Indians, and who perished with his warriors, defending the American cause, in the battle of Kingsbridge, on August 31, 1778. Next to his memorial is a church, which is an authentic reproduction of the Historic Red Mills Baptist Church, built in 1834. It is now the Veterans Memorial Meeting Hall.

To find the letterbox, walk up Chapel Lane to the end. It ends in a circle turn around. You will be facing a stone wall with a large opening. Don’t go through here, but follow the wall down the hill to the right. Enter at the second opening in the wall. There is a trail. Here I have had to change my clues, since they cleared out this section of the trail.Follow the trail until you come to an area where trees have been cut down (Not too far in). On the left is a huge stump, and downed trees to the right and the left of the trail. Pass this stump and you will come to a downed tree covered in moss (also on the left),that just touches the trail. Follow this tree to its stump and you will see another big tree next to it, sitting on top of a stone wall, with its roots facing you. Walk up to where the tree sits on top of the wall. A little to the left of this, in the wall, but towards the ground, you will find the letterbox. It is hidden in a natural “cave”, and covered with rocks. Please replace the box exactly where you found it, and cover with the same rocks. Make sure the box and bags are sealed tightly before hiding it again. You can turn back here, or follow this trail through another wall, where you’ll bear left. Go through a second wall and take the trail to the right. This trail will come up on a “carriageway”, which you will follow to the left, until it comes out at the larger opening in the rock wall, in front of the circle turn around. This area is usually buggy during the summer months, and watch for poison ivy.
