Chincoteague Island is a favorite vacation spot. Just across the bay is the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge on Assateague Island. You will find a plethora of wildlife on the island, including wading birds and endangered species, and of course, the famous wild Chincoteague Ponies. Assateague Lighthouse is a favorite spot and a short hike. You will find this box hidden along the lighthouse trail.
Park on the far end of the parking lot near the Assateague Lighthouse Trail. Take the trail on that end (the left side of the parking lot, not the one that starts at the large Lighthouse Trail sign. Go approximately 86 steps up the trail, starting at the small trail sign. Just after you cross under two leaning pines that cross above the trail, look for a stump on the left. This is your stopping point. Look to the right. You will see two logs, lying parallel just off the right side of the trail. The high light you seek is between the logs.
There is a fee to enter the wildlife refuge. Please be discreet as this is a busy trail. No dogs are allowed on the island. This is a very short walk. Enjoy your visit to my favorite spot on earth!
